The Myst Collection A community effort to document Myst merchandise
Spanish Myst Big-box

This is a Spanish-language big box edition of Myst belonging to the collection of Tommy Rossell, who has generously provided photos and scans for us.

This box is notable for the embossed metal plate with MYST stamped directly into the metal, an unusual feature not seen on other editions of Myst. This edition comes with a 1.0.2 copy of Myst (not Masterpiece) with FMVs that have been dubbed into Spanish. The box also claims to contain a Myst novel, almost certainly the Book of Atrus.

This artifact is partially incomplete, missing the novel and possibly also the jewel case artwork. Both Mr. Rossell's edition and another edition spotted on Todocoleccion lack the novel and any sort of jewel case insert, so it's not currently known which edition of the novel was included or if the jewel case was intented to have artwork. Several Spanish-language editions of Book of Atrus are known to exist and will be cataloged at a later date, but it's not currently known which edition came in this box.

Disclaimer: I do not speak Spanish. I did my best to hand-transliterate all of the Spanish-language text that appeared noteworthy, which have been machine translated for your benefit and mine. There are certainly errors in the machine translations, but as you'll see, almost all of the Spanish text in this artifact are direct translations from the US big-box release.

    (1536 x 1152, 0.15 MiB)

The Game     (3000 x 2976, 3.81 MiB)

This artifact includes a 1.0.2 copy of 256-color Myst that has been largely translated and dubbed into Spanish. With the exception of the opening and closing credits, all of the English text I could find anywhere in the game has been translated into Spanish, and all of the in-game FMVs have been dubbed into Spanish as well. While the Making Of video simply uses a Spanish narrator over top of the original audio, the in-game FMVs have had their audio completely replaced, resulting in differences in foley for things like the trap books.

I am unable to translate the FMVs to find any differences in the lines themselves, but I have no reason to believe that the dub has any significant changes to the original voice lines. The Spanish voice actors also seem to be uncredited: the in-game credits are completely unchanged, and the manual contains the same credits. The installer is also in English, though the readme (Leeme.txt) is in Spanish.

One other minor but possibly significant difference is that the translated marker switch instructions now have both "off" and "on" on the Channelwood half of the torn page. With only the text on the left and some contextual guessing, it seems marginally more possible for someone with this edition to figure out the marker switch vault before finding the second half of the page.

Here are an assortment of images and FMVs extracted from the disc, showing some examples of the translations and dubbing:

  Generator room labels  (544 x 332, 0.14 MiB)
  Channelwood tower key  (544 x 333, 0.14 MiB)

The Box     (7958 x 5000, 15.67 MiB)

The front of the box features a metal plate with MYST embossed into the metal, using a different typeface than the usual Myst logo. The subtitle proclaims:

Machine translation:
Includes the novel created by Rand and Robyn Miller with David Wingrove
Reissue of the world famous Myst, fully dubbed and translated into Spanish

The back of the box uses many elements taken from the standard US big box. All four screenshots on this Spanish edition also appear on the back of the US big box, and the text also appears to be directly translated from the original box as well. The paper-styled box on the left has the same letter from Atrus and the same blurb from the original box with no discernable differences other than the direct Spanish translation:

No

pasadas.

It could take up a lifetime. But it has happened
something terrible and someone's greed is destroying
my creations. I suspect one of my children,
Sirrus or Achenar but I can't be sure. No
I dare to write for fear of speaking too much.
My only hope is to find the answer
before it's too late...

Few are chosen, very few have
success. Travel now to an island-dyed world
of surreal mystery..., where each stone,
every piece of paper, every sound can
hide vital clues to unravel a
chilling story of intrigue and injustice
that defies all boundaries of time and
from space. Only with his intelligence and his
imagination will manage to follow the path
and reveal the ancient betrayal of the ages
passed.

On the right are four screenshots, a subset of the six screenshots on the US release. Of the three labels, the first two are also taken directly from the US release, while the third appears to be new:

Machine translations:
Screens show what the game actually looks like

Explore strange worlds of sober beauty in first person,
without controls or windows to distract you

Through detailed observation and logic you will be able to reveal the secrets of Myst

The system requirements are identical to those found on the Windows 3.1 release, and the copyright information appears to be boilerplate. On the very bottom of the box is an address and three phone numbers all from Madrid, Spain. Two sides of the box have the same MYST logo variant used in the metal plate on the front.

The Manual     (6000 x 26617, 43.36 MiB)

The included manual is printed in monochrome on normal paper, but has been cut with jagged edges to give it an aged appearance. Most of the manual's contents are directly translated from the manual of the US release which doubled as that version's jewel case insert. The first page is given here as an example:

hecho, probablemente no morirá.

You have just stumbled across an intriguing book, a book titled Myst.
He has no idea where it came from, who wrote it, or what era he is from.
Reading these pages provides you with a description
tremendously detailed of a strange world around an island.
But at the end of the day it's just a book, right?
When he reaches the end of the book, he rests his hand on a page. Of
suddenly his own world dissolves into darkness, and transforms into
the island world that the pages described. Now you are here,
without knowing where "here" is, with no choice but to explore...

A MESSAGE FROM CYAN
You are about to enter a surprising alternate reality. This
game was designed from the beginning so that you could participate in it without
hardly any distractions on the screen that interfere with the sectioning of
to be there. Myst is not linear, it is not flat, it is not superficial. It is the
maximum depth, the greatest detail and the most intense reality that
ever experienced in a game.
Myst is real. Like real life, you won't die every five minutes. Of
In fact, he probably won't die. There are no dead ends: you can
reach a moro, but there is always a way to overcome it. Must be
observer and collect data, because those are the pieces of the
puzzle that you will use to discover the secrets of Myst. The
puzzles you find will be solved with logic and
information, information you can get in Myst or in life
same. The key to Myst is to get lost in this fantastic exploration
virtual and act and react as if you were really there.

Later in the manual are translated adaptations of the same three hints that appeared as a separate trifold in the US big-box:

Don't give up! If you're not sure what to do next, fiddling around won't make things any easier. Think about what you already know, what you need to know, and put all these thoughts together to combine them correctly. Think about associated objects or places you have already seen, think about the information you have been given, pay close attention to everything you see, don't forget anything. But, most important of all is to think about what you would do if you were really there. Remember, you can always refer to a few brief hints in the last part of the manual... Track 1: Accessing the places of protection begins by examining everything on the walls of the library... If you need more, read the next clue... Track 2: Try to understand the function of the library map... Have you already managed to access the protection places?... If not, continue reading... Track 3: Activate the Myst Island placeholders to activate the places on the library map... Rotate the Tower towards the places that make the line go blank by clicking and holding the flashing icon on the map... Go to the Tower to find the access keys.

The very end of the manual has a badge for Impression Artes Graficas, S. L., a printing company based in Madrid. They appear to still exist at https://www.iag.es/, albeit with a different address and phone number than the ones provided in this manual.
