"Doom/Myst 20 Years After" Poster

This is a poster advertising a talk hosted at the NYU Game Center. The talk was an event that hosted John Romero and Rand Miller to discuss the games Doom and Myst, both which came out in the same year and were hugely dominant games in their genres. This talk was hosted on 18 April 2014 at the New York University campus.

This talk was originally posted on Vimeo, but the original video has since been taken down. Luckily, Rium+ saved a copy while it was still available. You can find Rium+'s high quality rip here, or watch the video on youtube:

This poster was designed by artist James Harvey, and this example was purchased directly from his online store as part of the original print run. The print run offered by James Harvey was a limited run of 100 posters, each one numbered and signed by the artist, printed on A2 sized archival board. This artifact is number 35 of 100.

At some point after the first 100 posters had sold, the same design appeared on Redbubble, posted by the NYU Game Center themselves (who presumably have ownership of the design). Redbubble offers multiple different sizes of this print, but none of these sizes match the original dimensions. Furthermore, Redbubble prints onto 185gsm semi-gloss poster paper, while the original print is on firm matte archival paper.

A design in the very center of the artwork, just above the door to the library, appears to be a Villein number from Obduction. However, this design isn't actually a properly-formed Villein number, and the design of this poster predates the release of Obduction by two years. This design is actually the logo of the NYU Game Center, and has nothing to do with Obduction. When I asked the artist about this in 2016, he said that he "was asked to hide the logo into the picture without making it too obvious, since they weren't allowed to officially bill this as a Games Center event." When the design is put into the Villein number interpreter on Hunrath, it autocorrects to the number 99.

Two small differences are visible between the original lithograph poster and the digital reference image from James Harvey's website: there is a black shape at the bottom edge of the image, as well as a black Y behind the word MYST. Neither of these are present on the poster; both of these areas are solid dark red. (The dark red lettering visible behind the white MYST text are still present.) These black sections are also present in the Redbubble listing image, and so they will probably be present on any posters purchased from Redbubble.
